Oversized Lighting
Are you looking for oversized lighting? Maximalism is here and we can show you the best lights for creating a modern focal point.
For years, minimalism has been seen as the cutting edge of contemporary design and whilst this is still a style that many favour, a contrasting look is making a polar opposite impact on interior design.
Maximalism is about using beautiful items and what you love in excess – more is more! Oversized Lighting to shout about without disturbing the neighbours…
The beauty of this trend is that there is no right or wrong, as it is simply using pieces that you love and enjoy without worrying about the restricting ‘rules’ of interior design. You know what you like and how you want it to look, so go for it!
Using bold colours, mixtures of patterns with items that capture attention at every turn. Intricate or large furniture with powerful artwork in a variety of frames, textures on walls and floors with a mix of cultural history all set off with the star of the show – oversized lighting.
Playing with large lighting on a grand scale brings a satisfaction to a space that nothing else can bring. They naturally bring a bright illumination to rooms whilst filling a void against the most sparse area – the ceiling. Stretching the diameter of your ceiling lights to make an impact is great, but one area that you need to be mindful of is the drop or projection from the ceiling. As a rule of thumb, you ideally need a minimum of 7 feet between the floor and the base of the light to allow enough headroom. If you want a lower drop than this, it is best to place the light over a dining table, sideboard or occasional table.
For ceiling heights that are 8 feet or lower, consider a flush ceiling light. One of our favourites is the stunning Pluto, a large chrome crystal chandelier. The circular chrome plate and shimmering luxe crystal decorations make a wonderful central statement – perfect for making an impact without bumping your head!
If you’re after a bit more of a clean, modern and contemporary look, you can have a look at the Cierro, 6 light ceiling-flush. Measuring 80 cm across, it has a drop of only 18cm to preserve your head height. This large flush drum light comes in ivory and is complete with a glass diffuser for a soft and glare free illumination. Available in other colours and sizes.
If you have a ceiling height of between 8 and 8 and a half feet tall, you can also extend your search to include oversized semi-flush ceiling lights. These will generally drop down from the ceiling a little more than a flush ceiling light but still allow the recommended 7 feet clearance required.
The 12 light traditional light from Dar lighting has a dual mount system which allows it to be used as a ceiling pendant or as a semi-flush fitting. The elegant, decorative scrolling arms on this light fit perfectly with the ornate maximalism look.
For a more modern take, you could consider the EOS Easy Fit Feather Ceiling Shade. These will attach to an existing ceiling pendant suspension and will make a huge impact with a whopping 110cm diameter!
For ceiling heights of 8 and a half foot and over, you can also consider using pendant lights – of course the best ones are extra large ceiling pendants. Have a look at The Nest 6 Light Island Chandelier from Lincoln American Lighting. It takes influence from nature, and birds nests, or to be exact elaborate structures that have fascinated us from the beginning of time. The addition of the silver leaf finish brings a chic contemporary look. This has a width of 121cm and maximum long drop of 382cm, so would look amazing down a grand staircase or for reception rooms with high ceilings.
The Piper from The New York Lighting Collection is a large and striking 18 light ceiling pendant. The Piper mixes modern metal work, finished in a dark, espresso colour with the femininity of delicate glass bead accents. Perfect in any interior, we love this as a long drop over a stairwell or as a feature in rooms with high ceilings.
The Sun Globe ceiling pendant from Graypants, has a 82cm diameter, so is sure to add a dramatic impact with a wonderful and unique texture and warmth. This has been made from recycled materials, made from old cardboard boxes. I’m sure you’ll agree that an old box has never looked so good!
An alternative to extra large lights is to look at chandeliers. An excellent traditional offering, full of luxurious details with 15 lights spread over 3 tiers. This is a grand light on a grand scale, the minimum height is 1.08 metres and is 1.25 metres in diameter! It comes supplied with cable and chain which increases the maximum drop to 5.88 metres, so is ideal for making an impact in a room with a really high ceiling, or perhaps a double height ceiling.
For a contemporary alternative to a chandelier, the Colorado provides all the glitz and glamour but with a modern, un-fussy silhouette.
Whatever your sense of style, we’re sure to have an extra large light to work with your design perfectly. Come and take a look for more ideas from our huge range of oversized lights!
