What are the best retro styled lights?
The term ‘retro’ means a style or fashion from the recent past. It does not really define a particular decade and therefore, we all have our own unique take of what retro designs we like, drawing on inspiration from several sources. For many, it will be fond childhood recollections of family members and their interior designs and fashions. Equally, it could also be from a TV program or from History lessons from school, but it does seem to evoke a sense of reminiscence in us all, making us feel nostalgic as we delve into our memories as we think about the styles of yesteryear.
Adding retro lighting to our homes can be implemented successfully whether it’s as a sentimental twist to a modern setting or as an authentic addition to a vintage setting. The lights themselves act to ground us as we envisage who designed them and what people would have bought them when the design was brand new.
Whilst this style does not apply to a particular era, it is widely thought of to be between post 20s to the early 70s, so these are the lighting designs that we focus on as part of our trip down memory lane.
1930’s Style Lights:
Art Deco continued its success in this decade but we also saw some other style of intricate glass and metal work come into the design before an abrupt halt in design advancement due to the threat and ultimate breakout of WW11. This saw a return to the slightly utilitarian factory hanging pendant style, favouring practicality over frivolity.

1940’s Style Lights:
At this period of time, it continued to be austere so materials were kept simple. Towards the end of the decade, these materials were subject to trials and experiments to bring back a flavour of the modernity enjoyed in the 20’s. Glass and crystal enjoyed a new lease of life, used with traditional metals in different forms.

1950’s Style Lights:
The designs tried in the late 40’s became a triumph in this period as conventional designs were re-worked and more luxurious materials were added to designs. This was the beginning of the Mid-Century Modern look, including the iconic Sputnik designed light fixtures, inspired by the launch of the first Satellite in 1957.

1960’s Style Lights:
The swinging 60’s bought a sense of freedom and fun and along with it, an injection of colour! Bold shapes, colours and styles were introduced and with an impetus on mass production, lamp shades were popular as you could easily change them for a new look easily by switching them over on an existing lamp holder.

1970’s Style Lights:
This was a golden era of ‘jobs for life’, security and comfort. Many took pride in furnishing their homes with the latest fashionable items. Confident and iconic, many of the genuine items still add a flourish to vintage settings.
