Historically, Japan and China have shared most cultures, despite being peppered with a troubled times. Many people would be forgiven for using either in an interior design.
Where they generally differ (and this is by rule of thumb, as there are always those odd exceptions!), is that Japanese style is generally more pared back and calming, whereas Chinese is more dramatic and flamboyantly decorative.
