Lighting the way with Coastal Style Lights

Lighting and Lights Coastal LightingWhat are the best coastal style lights?

Here at Lighting and Lights we’re getting shipshape and Bristol fashion with our coastal style lights. We’re Lighting the way for nautical designs! For centuries, we have been exhilarated by coastal stretches and beaches, the sights and smells creating an intoxicating blend that’s perfect for relaxation.

It’s a natural step to consider bringing this interior design trend into our homes and we’re seeing a great variety of coastal style and nautical interior designs which are as timeless as the appeal of the coast itself.

Jane Austen was a famous advocate of holidays by the seaside and wrote of her opinions in her unfinished novel named ‘Sanditon’ (written in 1817) regarding Brighton beach; “No person could be really well, in a state of secure and permanent health without spending at least six weeks by the sea every year.” During this era, the sea itself was largely believed to a remedy for any number of ailments and disorders.

Prior to this increasing popularity, seaside towns were historically smaller fishing towns and villages. They began to prosper and increased their efforts to attract the fast growing tourism trade. By the booming Victorian era, coastal areas offered a perfect balance of rest and relaxation by the beach with working-class amusements such as carousels and shooting galleries. As such, a calm and uncluttered interior design works as well as a fun and colourful one!

Adding a nautical twist to your setting will be a (sea) breeze and there are a couple of different ideas you can utilise to appeal to your inner style guru. What you do need to consider firstly, is your own personal perception and enjoyment of the coast and be mindful to include these when planning your design.

Fun Coastal Lights:

Many of our childhood memories will involve a visit to the seaside, splashing in rock pools, blue white stripy deckchairs, diving through the waves and sandy hands around warm sandwiches once we’ve built an impressive castle. Coastal interior designs work really well with a fun, whimsical approach and by far the easiest way to inject this is in the choice of your lighting.

Nautical Coastal Lighting with Rustic Charm:

Wallpaper, furniture and even colours may go out of fashion, but making an investment in lighting which can be applied to different styles is a sure fire win. Ideal to those who like to tweak their designs more regularly, the more natural take on nautical lighting can be applied to country and rustic inspired designs too.

Colourful Seaside Coastal Lights:

Some of us may prefer a more subtle approach to adding a nod to coastal design in our homes. Adding the colours that we instantly envisage when we picture our favourite coastal scene can be the perfect balance of evoking the memories without it being overly nautical to visitors. Whether it’s the warmth of golden sands, the cool greys of pebbles smoothed by the endless churn of the ocean or the turquoise blue of a cloudless Summer sky, colours that belong together in nature will work just as well in the home setting. Our top tip here is to choose white or pale wood furniture to ensure there’s a fresh sea breeze in the design too.

Traditional Nautical Ship Inspired Lighting Designs:

For an interior design with the history of our nations’ shores from an era of fisherman bobbing out on the waves, you could consider the traditional fisherman style lights to add to your design. Simple yet effective, these will also appeal to those seeking an industrial edge.

Neutral Tone Coastal Lights:

Many of us like to use a neutral colour palette in our homes and there are a great selection of lights that bring a seaside charm to your home whilst maintaining the achromatic tones.

Yacht Style Lighting:

A luxurious twist on the more usual of nautical design, this creates a real warmth and glamour to a setting. Picking furniture and lights in pale creams and chrome being teamed with shiny deep cherry or mahogany wood tones creates a sublime effect that’s as easy to relax in as it is to enjoy.

Exterior Coastal Safe Lighting:

For those that are lucky enough to have a property within 5 miles of the sea, you may have another requirement from coastal lighting. Being near to the sea, the air will contain more moisture and salt than inland areas. This leads to a faster corrosion of metals and other materials which will see the outside lights aging more rapidly. Here at Lighting and Lights, we have a range of outdoor lights that have increased resistance to corrosion for a style that lasts much longer.
