Are you looking to update a room in your home? Along with colours and layout, there are other considerations to get your home perfect.
Most of us will take our inspiration for our home design from magazines and blogs yet the looks that we are striving for are very much three-dimensional. By that, I mean that rather than sitting in a room with beautiful colours, we strive for something more experiential – evoking a feeling and there is no way better to introduce this than to add texture. Fabrics, bold prints, or textured lighting are all great additions to achieve this enchanting look.
We can add this in so many ways and one of the most popular of recent years is wallpaper. Far from being the small prints reminiscent of the 1990’s popularity, we are opting for large flowers or prints on a plain background. Taking another leap into the future, we are going to see a shift in this once again to further enhance the textured look. Full height landscape pictures, trees and plant life are bringing a more organic effect to rooms which are excellent at bringing the indoors inside and tie in with this year’s Pantone® colour of the year 2017, “Greenery”.
OK, so not everyone is a nature person. It can be muddy and cold to some, so why would they choose to bring this inside? If the natural look is not for you, what is a good alternative? Bold new designs of wallpaper are being introduced which fuse together two huge interior trends for this year – geometric patterns and metallic colours. The use of the patterns teamed with the shimmering colours adds a three-dimensional element which captivates the eye and the imagination.
That said, not everyone is a wallpaper person! How many of us have had to scrape the stuff off the walls when we have moved into a new home? It’s not fun and unless you are an expert, requires a load of filler before you can re-decorate, so it’s therefore worth thinking carefully before you hang it! If you like to keep up with the trends you could form a partnership with the humble paint roller – this, along with keeping floors and furniture neutral means that a few hours work with some new cushion covers, ornaments and lights and your room is bang up to date again.
Lighting is often one of the first things that you see in a room – especially when the daylight is dwindling outside and the lights are illuminating the room from their own viewpoint. They are therefore an extremely easy way to add some texture into your chosen room. Below are our favourite picks of textured lights across a whole range of trends and colours.
You don’t have to be daring and bold to experiment with textures. You can keep the colours serene and calming, whilst still introducing the texture you require. Textured glass is a great way to get this relaxing effect.
You can also play with colour and texture. It is best to keep a common colour with just the one accent colour to avoid it looking a bit clumsy. Regal colours work well with this – reds, golds and greens are reminiscent of luxury Palaces of long ago and will be an opulent treat for all rooms seeking a grander theme.

Decorative ceramic table lamp base in a deep red glazed finish with repeated bird pattern, the lamp sits atop of a dark wooden plinth. The lamp is switched by an inline rocker and would be suitable for any lounge or bedroom with a matching colour scheme.
A modern ceiling pendant in a red crackle glaze complete with chrome top and ceiling rose and a clear cable. In an elegant oval shape, this makes a great addition to any room. The crackles catch the daylight when not lit, and when in use, the light shines through the crackles offering a pretty twinkling light.
A coastal theme is ideal to use – driftwood and other natural textures all work together. Rustic metals are also great to add to this theme.

Drum shaped ceiling pendant light encircled with a border of gold cocoa twigs around a taupe silk shade, complete with a cotton diffuser on the bottom which hides the 4 bulbs from view. This exudes quality whilst offering a rustic effect.
Texture can also be introduced as a design within the light, such as the gorgeous handmade Tiffany style lights. The individual pieces of stained glass a soldered together with dark metals – the effect is a timeless and colourful effect which has its own unique texture. These are great to bring a quality to vintage and traditional rooms.

A large art glass ceiling light made from rich tonal buttermilk glass bordered with floral motifs of blue, green, red and amber glass. Over 600 pieces of glass are used to produce this beautiful colourful masterpiece. The light shade is suspended below a bronzed framework which also has super detail, amber glass jewel beads are set within the chain to compliment the shade. The light up-lights to produce a ‘glare free’ relaxing lighting effect ideally suited to traditional homes or any home where an ambient mood lighting is required. Truly beautiful, sure to be antiques of the 21st century.
A matching table lamp in the same tones – the light shade is above a bronzed lamp stand which also has super detail. This lamp also benefits from dual light switches allowing 2 levels of light. We love this attention to detail.
Bringing metallic items into a home will instantly add a texture due to the way that they bounce the light around the room. Playing with this natural reflective material, you can enhance the effect and none do it better than the Stanley Pendant by Original BTC. Handmade in the UK, these gorgeous lights come in a variety of colours and are also available in a smooth finish.

A unique rustic design double wall light with a wooden design in a bronze finish complete with taupe silk shades. Perfect for lighting in rustic and country themes. This would give a touch of design anywhere in the home, but we love it in living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.
An impressive 6 light ceiling pendant with a wood effect detailing in the inner shade in a bronze finish. Complete with a large taupe drum shade with a metallic bronze inner lining. This looks great in any rustic setting and is particularly effective over dining tables as the metallic shade lining reflects a wide reaching, warm illumination. Complete with a decorative suspension which can be shortened at the point of installation for those with lower ceilings.
So we hope that this has inspired you to take a leap and add some texture to your home.
