It’s that time of year once again and whether you love it or loathe it, Christmas provides a great reason for the family to get together and celebrate.
With families often living further apart than in previous generations, it is especially important to make the effort to see each other once a year and will more often than not, result in a last minute attempt to brighten up a spare room that is devoid of any personality to accommodate your staying guests. More often than not, we use our spare bedrooms as anything but a bedroom! Magnolia walls, bland curtains offer a backdrop for a laundry room, wardrobe extension, study or a playroom which do not exactly scream out a luxury stay for your nearest and dearest.
Well panic not. Hotels are fantastic at emulating style and comfort, yet when you look at the actual soft furnishings, they are probably not dissimilar from some items you already have lurking in the back of your airing cupboard. In fact, plain and neutral coloured fabrics and furnishings instead of being dull, will actually work in your favour used as part of a general overhaul.

Firstly, clear out the clutter and rearrange the furniture as if you were going to use the room as a bedroom all the time – it can always go back to how it was after the Christmas season. Keep surfaces and shelves clear so that there is somewhere to store their belongings. Add a freestanding towel rail for their convenience, or an over-radiator airer if you are lacking in floor space.

Our suggestion would be to have a ceiling pendant light (or flush if you are in a home with low ceilings), a bedside light (ideally for each guest); either a table lamp or a wall light, and if you are fortunate enough to have a large room, a floor lamp is great at adding a luxurious ambience to any space.
