Lighting up Matte Black Magic

Matte black is the new black!

Matte black lights are here! As comforting as the inky black night sky, matte black is capturing our attention for all the right reasons. We’re seeing this contemporary finish, bring black back in to our favourite colour palettes, with the finish being seen used on everything, from cars and home appliances to interior designs and lighting.

But it’s the shadow and light that we’re fascinated by with this finish, the sheer contemporary nature of the colour contrasting with the illumination which creates the captivating look of black magic.

Being matte in finish, the light does not reflect as it would from a crisp, glossy finish. It is in fact, it’s the complete other end of the scale. Where gloss paint can actually affect the perceived colour of the light depending on the viewing angle, matte finishes are as honest as you can get, as the light is diffused across the surface. When the matte finish is teamed with black, it’s a total black out which gives a soft, tactile effect that drawers us in to the ebony, obsidian dark depths.

Henry Ford got it spot on with he said “you can have any colour, so long as it is black” about his ford model T. Who would have thought that he’d be spotting the trend in the limelight exactly 100 years later?!

Let’s go back to black and fill our little black books with our favourite matte black lights!

There really is no other more striking contrast than black on white, which are more the absolute expressions of light and dark as opposed to a colourway. Chiaroscuro is an Italian word dedicated to describing the unique, bold and stark contrast between black and white, or light and shadow which I’m sure you’ll agree is like no other, as the words are printed on this page. A technique used by artists and directors of film noir; black and white photography seems to make people look more striking.
