150 years ago, on the 8th June 1867, American architect, interior designer, educator and writer, Frank Lloyd Wright was born. Hugely successful, he designed over a thousand structures and throughout, a kinship with humanity and organic material was prevalent.
He was notably influential on the Art Deco movement, which was popular throughout Europe during the 1920’s and 30’s. It was born from a desire to be modern, yet in its modernity relied on teaming proven art designs, such as Cubism (strong geometric presence) and Fauvism (bright colours).
Art Deco gained in popularity and began to spread to America, Russia, Africa and Asia. Each country embraced the design with a hint of their own unique patriotic traditional style and this, combined with its adoration during the period of carefree nonchalance between the World Wars, heralded Art Deco as the first international architectural and design trend.
A strong and iconic design, it influenced architecture furniture, wallpaper and lighting and has managed to retain its popularity in a more muted manner until the present day. We are now seeing a resurgence of the use of this design, which is as viable in modern and contemporary properties as it is in glamorous hotels and restaurants of the era.
