The Summer is over and the nights are drawing in, but instead of despairing, you can adapt your home and habits to bring about a feeling of calm, relaxed comfort often associated with Summer holidays.<\/p>\n

Following a recent study into the \u2018happiest\u2019 populations, research has been undertaken to help define what helps to give us the sense of well-being that we associate with happiness.<\/p>\n

Denmark is amongst the highest ranking for the world\u2019s happiest country and one theory as to why is \u2018hygge\u2019. Pronounced \u2018Hoo-Ga\u2019, it is derived from a Norwegian word, meaning \u2018well being\u2019. So what is this?<\/p>\n

There is no strict science or logic to this, but the key focus to achieve this vibe is kindness. Being kind to yourself and others, creating a welcoming, all-encompassing environment whilst ensuring comfort and warmth.<\/p>\n

It can be a simple thing like drinking a hot beverage from a favoured mug, reading a cherished book or sharing a favourite meal with extended family. It\u2019s all about feeling at home and relaxed and focusing on what makes you\u00a0(and your nearest and dearest) happy.<\/p>\n

So, all of this sounds ideal doesn\u2019t it? But one thing to really consider is banishing any devices. It has been well documented of late, that most of us spend too long on our phones and tables with experts now recommending that we should try a \u2018detox\u2019 and monitor our usage. Perhaps though, it is not necessary to take such large steps, after all, most things we enjoy in moderation will contribute to our overall happiness, not detract from it. Consider instead checking your emails and Facebook outside of your favourite seat in the living room \u2013 you will soon want to put it down and spend some quieter time in a comfy seat without it!<\/p>\n

Many feel that lights are more relaxing when they are lit behind you or at lower levels, so consider where you can place your lights in relation to your furniture and select some alternative locations that best suit the room.<\/p>\n

It is worth considering what your eyes will rest on when the large screen in the room is not turned on. Interesting lights can become a welcoming and relaxing focal point in a room, the combinations of light and shade can be stunning!<\/p>\n

Another quick win, is to team your overhead light with a dimmer switch and dimmable bulbs \u2013 this light is often the brightest in the room and whilst you may need this on occasion, a warmer glow will work wonders when you come to put your feet up.<\/p>\n
