A structured design of lighting with glass box shapes, showcasing the lightbulb, this contemporary look was born in the industrial era from a requirement to have simple, effective lights. What are the best lights to choose for the Box Clever design?

Our love of cubes echoes through the ages, evoking a feeling of grounded, reliable solidity teamed with the excitement of gifts and unexpected parcels sent from loved ones through the post.

Useful and stylish, we have used variation of boxes throughout our homes for hundreds of years, to safely store our cherished items and to stow away clutter in an effort to maintain the elegant design of our rooms.

The box designs therefore sit perfectly in traditional, industrial, New Deco, modern and contemporary settings. Similar to a museum exhibition cabinet, the bulb is on full display so to carry the overall effect of the light, it’s worth paying attention to the bulbs that you are choosing. A selection of beautiful LED bulbs that keep the vintage aesthetics of a traditional filament bulb, befitting of being used in open pendants can be found here.

The glass or open sides ensure that they will work with any colour scheme, so are ideal to use to finish off a newly designed room, or to add a splash of interest into an existing one.

Lighting inspired by box shapes are universally practical for all areas around the home. A selection of interior lights bring a statement, whilst lights used around the exterior of the home bring an understated air of quality with a variation from the more traditional coach lantern inspired design.

Let’s start with the heart of the home – the Kitchen. Kitchens are a room in the house where we all spend a lot of time and we are proud to display the latest gadgets amidst a meticulously planned layout of coordinating cupboards and worktops. The lighting in this room really adds to the scene by drawing your eye up, accentuating the design and by providing much needed task lighting to prepare your favourite meals.

For the main ceiling light in the room, it is important for a generous spread of light to reach the areas that you are working in. It is therefore beneficial to have a light that incorporates more than one bulb.

Lighting over a breakfast bar or kitchen island is a great way to zone the space. Pendant lights are ideal for this and if you have a large worktop space to illuminate, a smaller, lower hanging version of the main ceiling light can add a cohesive effect to the room.

Making a splash in the dining room is easy with a row of ceiling pendants, or a ceiling pendant bar. Balancing the size of your light to the size of your table is important here – somewhere between a third to half the length of the table should be about right. Alternatively, you can use a row of ceiling pendants to achieve a similar effect.

In hallways, hallway lanterns come into their own. In times gone by, these would have used candles and the glass would have protected the candles from being blown out by drafts of doors opening and closing, so the familiarity of the lights is a welcoming sight in all entrance halls.
