Double Insulated Lights | Lighting and Lights UKWhat lights are safe if I don’t have an earth cable?

If you’ve come across this blog, you have probably been informed that you need double insulated lighting, also referred to as Class 2 lights. Firstly, don’t worry, it’s not a daunting subject to understand and during this blog we’ll address what you need to know. Secondly, you don’t have to compromise your sense of style as there is still a great and plentiful selection of lighting styles that are double insulated.

What are Double Insulated lights?

Double insulated lights that are specially made with additional insulation (a double layer in fact!) which are safe to use without an earth cable being present in the lighting circuit. Older properties that were built before 1970 were not required to have an earth cable present. What this means is that lights that are not double insulated, used in a property without an earth wire may in turn use the person who is operating the switch as the earth and you could get a nasty shock!

The additional layer of insulation in Class II lights, isolates the live cables which prevents the fitting from becoming live and will therefore reduce the risk of receiving an electric shock.

For homes that were built after 1970, an earth cable was likely to have been included but if in doubt, consult with an electrician who will ensure that you are getting the correct level of protection for your home.
