February is here and around the corner is Valentine’s Day. The day has been associated with romantic gestures since the 14^th Century, but it really stated to gain momentum as we recognise it today, during the 18^th Century. Flowers, confectionary and handmade greeting cards were exchanged by lovers which became known as valentines and the symbols used include hearts, doves and the winged figure of Cupid. Today, we add evenings out, clothes, jewellery and gift cards to this list in an effort to spoil and impress our loved ones.

Although never recognised as a public holiday, it remains celebrated across many countries. It is predominantly valued as a concept by couples, yet it also offers an opportunity to express feelings towards someone who is currently unaware of them, either by declaring your love or by choosing to remain anonymous.

It’s all just a bit of fun really, except perhaps for those whose affections are unrequited. It brings a lightness to what can otherwise be a bleak and cold month, adding splashes of pink and sparkles throughout.
